Explore the allure of lake life in the Midwest as you immerse yourself in a serene paradise of natural splendor. Nestled within the heartland of America, these picturesque lakes offer a breathtaking tapestry of clear waters, lush greenery, and tranquil surroundings. Delight in the enchanting melodies of chirping birds and gentle lapping waves as you bask in the warm embrace of sun-kissed shores. Whether you're casting a fishing line, leisurely cruising on a boat, or simply unwinding on a dock, the Midwest's idyllic lakes provide an oasis of peace and tranquility, where one can revel in the simple yet profound beauty of nature.
The works in this collection are inspired by the plein air painting tradition. With each brushstroke, plein air painters become conduits for the breathtaking beauty that surrounds them. The wildflower meadows burst forth in a riot of colors, infusing the canvas with vibrancy and life. Fish dance beneath the water's surface, their graceful movements inspiring the artist. Towering trees stand as stoic sentinels, their branches reaching toward the heavens, while deer gracefully graze in the distance. Beavers diligently construct their watery habitats, and foxes dart playfully among the underbrush. Yet it is the majestic bald eagles that command attention, their soaring flight and piercing gaze a symbol of strength and freedom.
Scroll through the pictures in our galleries and feel transported into a world of scenic beauty and abundant wildlife. Also, witness people interacting with these surroundings, whether by boating on the lake, taking Sunday family walks in the woods, or meeting with like-minded friends for plein air sessions in the flower meadows. A collection on "Small Town USA" lets you travel to the quaint little towns of America's heartland. These are places seemingly lost in time, where a barber puts his seats out on a hot day when the air-conditioning failed, where children play in fountains and open water hydrants, play ball, sell lemonade, or rush home to grandma's house with the rockers on the front porch and the iced tea on the kitchen table. During Fourth of July and special local street fairs, the whole town shows up to celebrate. Other collections focuses on family barbecues, small town fairs, or the comfort of summer fruit pies.
Our art galleries featuring Midwestern lake life and scenes from small towns, are accompanied by a blog "On a Lake in the Heartland," which gets published weekly on social media, as well as the blog page on this site. Whether you currently live in the heartland, have fond memories of growing up here, used to visit your grandparents' farm, or whether you have never been here and are curious about life in the American Midwest, we hope you will enjoy visiting our pages and get transported to a place we hold dear.

In the heartland of America, nestled on the serene shores of a picturesque lake, lives a rather introverted woman whose life took an unexpected turn. Diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer at the age of 52, she found herself facing a harsh reality: the future she once envisioned for travel adventures and artistic expression was slipping away, so was her strength to endure the strain of the kind of overseas travel she had enjoyed all her life. Limited by a three-week recurring chemotherapy schedule, she nevertheless tried to take trips as time and strength allowed, ticking off her travel bucket list in three-week-increments. In the months that saw her homebound, unable to go where her mind wanted to, she turned to the world of online traveling. Undeterred by her circumstances, she sought comfort and inspiration in the realm of AI, where she gave life to her virtual alter ego: Alex Erikson.
Alex Erikson, a creation of AI, is a globetrotting adventurer and artist, a virtual manifestation of unfulfilled dreams. With the power of AI technology, we can explore the world through his eyes, words, and brushstrokes, transcending the limitations of being tied down by circumstance. Alex's blog focuses on two worlds – the home life on a lake in the heartland his creator knows so well, as well as her memories of overseas globetrotting. Remembering the many places she has visited in person, they became the settings for Alex’s global nomad life style. Thus, Alex Erikson is traveling to the places she has seen and loved - and turns them into paintings with the help of AI.
Through the virtual artistry of Alex Erikson, his author can create beyond the confines of her physical abilities. AI's capacity to analyze artistic patterns and styles allows her to craft visions of the Midwestern lakes into wild and expressive oil paintings reminiscent of Van Gogh's masterpieces - or conjure serene and ordered Arts and Crafts designs inspired by William Morris. Her true love, though, is for German “modernism”: the colors of Paul Klee and Marc Chagall, and the shapes of Lyonel Feininger. Taking these diverse artistic schools of a hundred years ago and turning their artistic lenses on lake life in the heartland, AI brings her visions to life in mesmerizing hues and shapes.
As Alex’s creator navigates her own challenges, the magic of AI has become a beacon of hope and empowerment. This symbiotic relationship between human creative guidance and AI assistance expands the realms of art and innovation. AI-powered platforms provide personalized expression, tailored to individual preferences and pace.
As she delved deeper into the potential of AI, the idea of Eagle Creek Wares was born in the summer of 2023, an online company inspired by lake life and plein air painting. The company is an LLC and holds the trademark over its name, abbreviation, and logo. ECW offers printed canvases, home decorations, household goods, and a limited line of clothing, inviting others to embrace the beauty of her world. The Eagle Creek Wares website offers not only merchandise, but also virtual art galleries, where visitors can enjoy lake life as seen through the artistic lenses of the art movements she enjoys.
Finally, the website is home of Alex Erikson’s Blog on Lake Life in the Midwest during summers – and his globetrotting adventures during winters.
Through the creation of Alex Erikson, a woman dying of cancer has found strength in her virtual alter ego's adventures, using AI to express her creativity. While her physical journey is limited, her spirit soars beyond borders, leaving an indelible mark on the virtual landscape she is bringing to life. With every virtual brushstroke and written word, she defies the constraints of her illness, proving that the magic of AI can empower people to reach beyond themselves, embracing the fullness of life's possibilities.

With the AI component in the creative process out of the way and very clear in everyone’s mind, let us now meet the hero of this website, Alex Anderson.
For those of you that may criticize the fact that my alter ego is male, let me say this much: I come from a long line of strong women. My mother, grandmother and great-grandmother had a firm grip on their lives and ruled their husbands with iron fists. I never had a need for feminism, as gender equality was my lived experience growing up. I first chose the name “Alex” as it was gender neutral and I tried to dance around the defining pronouns. Why did he become a man in the end and not a strong ass-kicking female cancer warrior? Because I am that already, and I wanted to explore the other side. After all, this fantasy is about living all that I can no longer live, so why not see it from the other side of the gender divide?

Alexander Scott Erikson was born into a military family, experiencing an itinerant childhood, moving between military bases across the globe. However, his high school years offered a sense of stability as he resided at his grandparents’ lake house in Minnesota.
Driven by a passion for service and adventure, Alex enrolled in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) at the University of Minnesota. This decision paved the way for his subsequent six-year tenure in the United States Navy.
Following his military service, Alex embarked on a new chapter of his life, by founding his own outdoor adventure company in Minnesota. Alex enjoys the “quiet sports” that allow him to hear the sounds of the water and wildlife around him. He thus indulges in non-motorized outdoor adventure sports, consciously avoiding what he considers “noise pollution”: motorboats, snowmobiles, jet skis, propeller airplanes, motorcycles etc. Instead, sailing, kayaking, diving, swimming, snowboarding, skiing, and hang-gliding provide him with an adrenaline rush and a profound connection to nature.
It was during this phase of his life that he married his former high school sweetheart, Annika Settergren, a talented watercolor artist, and high school art teacher. Together, they welcomed a child and lived a charmed life in an American small town on a lake in Minnesota. However, tragedy struck when cancer claimed the life of Annika. Their son Scott had just left home for college and was forging his own life, thousands of miles away from home. Alex was on his own again. In the aftermath of this loss, Alex turned to writing and painting as outlets for his grief.
Although using the inherited family lake house as his permanent home base in summers, for most of his time Alex embraces the lifestyle of a global nomad. Not bound by restrictive employment, he enjoys his freedom. Alex is venturing across the world as his spirit guides him, staying at each place for a week or a few months. His explorations are encompassing most countries around the world, and so far, his favorite places are Sweden, New Zealand, and South Africa.
In 2023, Alex founded Eagle Creek Wares, an online company offering printed canvases, home decorations, household goods, and a limited line of clothing inspired by lake life and plein air painting. This venture allows him to share his passion for art and the beauty of the natural world with others, while not compromising his lifestyle as a global nomad.
Starting in September of 2023, Alex will be releasing a travel guidebook about Lakes of the Midwest every month for the duration of one year. Each of the twelve volumes of the series will be covering 10 lake destinations in each of the 12 states that make up the American Midwest.

Traditional watercolor artists start out by laying transparent washes onto their canvas. In artwork of this medium, the white page not only shines through the paint, the parts of the painting not touched by an artist's brush are creating in themselves interesting "negative space" effects. Watercolor painting embodies the essence of transparency and fluidity. With delicate strokes and the interplay of water and pigment, it captures the luminosity and ethereal nature of its subjects. The subtle blending and layering of colors create a gentle and atmospheric quality, evoking a sense of tranquility and harmony. The unpredictability and spontaneity of the medium lend a unique charm, as the artist embraces the flowing nature of watercolors. From delicate washes to intricate details, watercolor painting invites the viewer into a world of softness, where colors dance and blend with grace, revealing the artist's mastery of both control and letting go.
Traditional watercolor is an ideal medium for capturing animal portraits and depictions of everyday life due to its unique qualities that enhance the authenticity and charm of these subjects. The translucency and fluidity of watercolors allow for the delicate rendering of fur, feathers, or the intricate details of animals' features. The layering and blending techniques in watercolor painting enable artists to achieve a sense of depth and texture. Moreover, watercolors beautifully capture the fleeting moments and subtle nuances of everyday life, effortlessly conveying the spontaneous and ephemeral nature of ordinary scenes. The gentle washes and subtle gradients achievable with watercolors lend themselves perfectly to the soft lighting and atmospheric effects that often characterize these depictions. Whether it's the warmth of sunlight streaming through a window or the play of shadows on a quiet street, watercolors infuse these everyday moments with a sense of tranquility and evoke a nostalgic sentiment.

Any traveler to Midwestern towns will recognize the many "Craftsman Style" homes that grace residential streets of small and larger towns alike. This architectural tradition, that was popular especially between 1900 and 1930, had its roots in the British "Arts and Crafts" movement of the 1860s. The textiles, home furnishings, wallpapers, stained glass windows etc. of British artists like William Morris have long been considered a perfect match to decorate interiors of American Craftsman style homes. The appreciation for British artists like Morris is as in fashion today as it was 100 years ago.
The collection shown here takes its inspiration from William Morris and the British Arts and Crafts school. However, it reinterprets it with distinctly American motifs. This style is characterized by a deep appreciation for the beauty and harmony of nature. It seamlessly weaves organic motifs and botanical elements into its designs, inspired by the flora and fauna found around the lakes of the American heartland. With meticulous attention to detail, these pictures capture the essence of the natural surroundings, translating them into intricate patterns and vibrant color palettes. This art celebrates the interconnectedness of all living things, reflecting a reverence for the natural world. It invites viewers to immerse themselves in a world where nature's beauty and serenity are elegantly translated onto the canvas, fostering a deep sense of connection and appreciation for the environment. .

Impressionism originated in the late 19th century, primarily in France, and sought to capture fleeting moments and sensations through the use of light and color. Impressionist artists, such as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro, aimed to convey the immediate visual impression of a scene or object. They often painted outdoors, en plein air, to observe and capture the transient effects of light, weather, and atmosphere.
In terms of the depiction of nature, impressionists focused on representing the play of light and its effects on the natural world. They employed loose brushwork and short, visible brushstrokes, allowing the viewer's eye to blend the colors and create a sense of luminosity. Colors were often applied directly onto the canvas without extensive mixing, resulting in vibrant and harmonious compositions. Impressionist paintings typically featured scenes from nature, such as landscapes, gardens, and water reflections, with an emphasis on the beauty of the momentary and the atmospheric.
The pieces in this collection have been inspired by Vincent van Gogh. His unique painting technique bridges the realms of impressionism and expressionism. He employed bold and vibrant brushwork, applying thick layers of paint onto the canvas with fervor. His brushstrokes possessed an energetic quality, capturing the essence of movement and emotion. Van Gogh's use of color was revolutionary, as he pushed the boundaries of traditional palettes, opting for intense and heightened hues to convey his innermost feelings. Through his masterful technique, he sought to evoke an emotional response in the viewer, transcending mere visual representation. Van Gogh's art encapsulates the spontaneity and immediacy of impressionism while delving deeper into the realm of expressionism, where he explored his own psyche and the raw human experience. His style has never gone out of fashion and is still employed by plein air painters today. The pieces in this collection bring the techniques that Gogh pioneered to the setting of American lake life in the 21st century.

Finally, we are featuring a collection that we have simply named “Modern Art” – for lack of a proper description. The phrase “modern” is somewhat of a paradox, as about a century has passed since these works shocked their contemporaries. It is a mix of European, mostly German, mid-century influences that we have brought to depict American lake life in the heartland – almost a century later.
German Expressionism (1905-1933): German Expressionism emerged in the early 20th century and lasted until the early 1930s. This artistic movement prioritized the expression of intense emotions, subjective experiences, and social critique. Artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Emil Nolde utilized bold colors, distorted forms, and expressive brushwork to convey inner feelings and reflect the anxieties of the modern world.
Cubism (1907-1914): Cubism, which emerged in 1907 and thrived until 1914, was a highly influential art movement. Pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, it revolutionized artistic representation by breaking down objects into geometric forms and challenging traditional notions of perspective and representation. Cubist artworks depicted multiple viewpoints simultaneously, highlighting the subjective nature of perception and exploring new ways of capturing the essence of the subject.
The Blue Rider Group (1911-1914): The Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter) group, active from 1911 to 1914, was an artistic collective founded by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. It aimed to create a new visual language that emphasized spiritual and emotional aspects of art. The group promoted abstraction, symbolism, and the use of vibrant, non-naturalistic colors to evoke emotions and connect with the viewer's inner world. The Blue Rider artists believed in the transformative power of art and sought to break free from societal constraints.
Bauhaus (1919-1933): The Bauhaus, founded in 1919 and disbanded in 1933, was a revolutionary German art school. It aimed to bridge the gap between art, craft, and industry, advocating for the integration of design into everyday life. Led by Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus embraced modernism and emphasized functionalism, geometric forms, and innovative use of materials. It produced influential artists and designers such as Marcel Breuer and Wassily Kandinsky, fostering a new approach to design and architecture.
These movements emerged during the early 20th century and collectively played a significant role in reshaping artistic conventions, challenging traditional forms, and exploring new approaches to representation, abstraction, and the relationship between art and society. Therefore, the term "Modernism" can serve as a broad umbrella concept that encompasses these diverse styles and movements, highlighting their shared pursuit of innovation, experimentation, and a departure from established artistic norms.
The result is a remarkable artistic style that revolves around the interplay of light and color, creating captivating visual experiences. Our collection embodies a harmonious fusion of elements from these diverse artistic movements. Light dances across these canvases, illuminating forms and imbuing them with a captivating vitality. Vibrant and contrasting colors intermingle, creating visual symphonies that captivate the eye and stir the soul. These vibrant hues imbue these works with a sense of energy and evoke a range of moods, from serene tranquility to exhilarating dynamism. Admirers of Paul Klee and Lyonel Feininger will find several pieces that have tried to pay homage to the color choices and painting styles of these two artists.
Paul Klee (1879-1940): Paul Klee, active from the late 19th century to 1940, was a Swiss-German painter associated with various art movements, including Expressionism, Surrealism, and abstraction. Klee's artistic contributions lie in his unique approach to color, form, and composition. He created imaginative and symbolic works, often incorporating elements of humor and playfulness. Klee explored the relationship between music and painting, aiming to create visual harmonies that resonated with the viewer's emotions and intellect.
Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956): Lyonel Feininger, active from the late 19th century to 1956, was an American-German artist associated with multiple artistic movements, including Cubism, Expressionism, and the Bauhaus. His artistic contributions lie in his distinctive fusion of geometric abstraction, expressive brushwork, and a masterful treatment of light and color. Feininger's works often depicted architectural subjects, capturing the interaction between man-made structures and their environment. He created dynamic compositions that conveyed a sense of movement and energy, leaving a lasting impact on the development of modern art.
